Although
I am intrigued by functional pottery and am moved by its strength,
poise and balance, I find my deepest artistic passion in pure
organic form. Since 2003, I have worked with porcelain and adore
its purity, softness and translucency. Using the elements of this
medium, I have created organic works that express an effortless
beauty of movement. These pieces possess a sense of intimacy and
grace that join genuine, unalloyedstrength and power.
I use many steps in this process. First the porcelain is pulled
to its full elasticity. I then alter it by slow spinning on the
wheel to invest in the piece my love of movement. Different tools
are used to intensify the alterations and create shadowy depth.
I use a subtractive and
sometimes additive process to enhance the sensation of movement
and the porcelain’s white, innocent purity. The final result is
then fired to cone 10 to further its stability and transparency.
My love for dance also has sparked the evolution of my work and
continues to provide me with my initial inspiration. As in observing
a modern dance piece, the sense of movement and light take my
work to a deeper level of intensity. That movement gives them
true shape when light is shown on their translucent pure form--
casting shadows for color and depth. |
